When you are at a restaurant and ready to order, let the server (der Kellner for a male, die Kellnerin for a female) know what you want by using bestellen. Usually, you start by asking for the menu:

• Könnte ich bitte die Speisekarte haben?
• Haben Sie auch eine Weinkarte?

To order appetizers, you can say:

• Als Vorspeise nehme ich die Suppe.
• Ich hätte gern einen Salat als Vorspeise.

For main courses, use:

• Als Hauptgericht hätte ich gern das Hähnchen.
• Ich nehme das Gulasch, bitte.

If you want a dessert:

• Als Nachspeise nehme ich das Dessert.
• Ich hätte gern ein Eis als Nachspeise.

For drinks:

• Ich möchte ein Glas Mineralwasser.

If you want to know how long your food will take:

• Wie lange dauert es?

Making Payments

After your meal, to ask for the check:

• Könnte ich bitte die Rechnung haben?
• Die Quittung, bitte.

To pay, you may want to specify how:

• Ich möchte bar bezahlen. (paying with cash)
• Kann ich mit Kreditkarte bezahlen? (paying by credit card)

If you would like to leave a tip, use:

• Das ist für Sie. (when giving the tip directly)
• Stimmt so. (when you round up the total payment for the tip)

Questions About Food and Drinks

If you have questions about what’s available or about the food, try:

• Wie viel kostet das?
• Wie viele Portionen sind das?
• Ist das Fisch oder Fleisch?
• Was empfehlen Sie?
• Wie viel kostet ein Glas Wein?
• Ist das Essen gut?

If you are allergic or want to know about specific ingredients, you can ask den Kellner or even den Koch if they are available. For example:

• Gibt es Nüsse in diesem Gericht?

Describing Food and Drinks

When talking about or describing your food or drink, you may use:

• Das Fleisch ist gut.
• Die Suppe schmeckt schlecht.
• Die Pasta ist frisch.
• Der Kaffee ist stark.
• Die Limonade ist süß.

To ask for something more or to describe the amount:

• Könnte ich bitte mehr Brot haben?
• Noch ein Glas Bier, bitte.

Sometimes you may want to distinguish between items:

• Ich esse lieber Reis als Kartoffeln.
• Ich bestelle Gemüse statt Fleisch.

Many typical drinks and foods in German restaurants come from both German-speaking and international cuisine. For example, Gulasch is often from Hungarian tradition but commonly found in German menus. In Germany and Austria, it is customary to leave a small tip, usually by rounding up the bill or leaving about 5–10%.
